Home Battery + EV: Should You Charge Your Car From the Battery?

Using a home battery to charge an EV can work, but there are efficiency and capacity trade-offs worth understanding first.

Technically you can charge an EV from a home battery, but it’s usually inefficient — you’re converting and storing energy twice. In most cases the EV should use solar surplus or cheap grid directly, not drain your house battery.

The real dynamics

  • Charging the car from the battery adds losses and depletes your home backup reserve
  • A 10kWh battery only moves a fraction of an EV’s full charge
  • Solar surplus to the car is usually better than battery → car
  • Battery → car makes sense mainly in emergencies or outage scenarios
Can a home battery power an EV in a blackout?
Yes, for small top-ups, but a big battery charge would drain the house battery quickly and may exceed its discharge power. Not a practical daily pattern.
