A typical residential install runs from a site visit to switch-on over a few weeks (the physical installation itself is often one or two days). Here’s the realistic process so you know what to expect — and what to confirm before signing.
The steps
- Initial consultation and solar site assessment
- System design, quotes and contract
- Permits, approvals and grid connection application
- Scaffold and array installation (often 1–2 days)
- Electrical connection and inverter commissioning
- Inspection, meter/export arrangement and switch-on
How long each stage takes
- Quoting/design: days to ~2 weeks
- Approvals: days to several weeks (region-dependent)
- Install: 1–2 days for typical homes
- Connection/comissioning: days to weeks for grid meter work
How long before I can switch my system on?
Once installed by a licensed installer and approved, most systems can start operating quickly — but net-metering/meter upgrades can add weeks in some regions.
