Are Home Solar Batteries Worth It? An Honest Breakdown
Batteries add resilience and shift your solar into the evening, but they are not right for every home. Here’s how to decide honestly, without the hype.

A home battery stores excess solar during the day and releases it in the evening, when many homes use the most energy. That sounds simple — but whether it pays off depends on your tariff structure, your usage pattern, and how much you value backup during outages.
When a battery makes sense
- You have time-of-use tariffs with expensive peak rates
- You frequently pay full retail rates in the evening
- You want backup power during grid outages
- Your feed-in tariff for exporting solar is low
When it probably doesn’t
- You only pay a flat rate and your feed-in tariff is good
- You rarely have outages and evening use is low
- You plan to move in under five years (long payback)
Backup vs arbitrage
Decide what the battery is for. Backup power justifies a smaller, always-reserved battery. Maximising savings (arbitrage) needs a battery sized to your evening load and discharge cycle. These are different designs.
How long do batteries last?
Most come with 10-year warranties and are designed for thousands of cycles, typically 10– 15 years of usable life depending on usage.
