String Inverters vs Microinverters vs Power Optimisers
The three main inverter architectures explained — how they handle shading, monitoring, and failure, and which fits your roof.

Your inverter converts the DC power from your panels into the AC power your home and the grid use. It is the most failure-prone component in a solar system, so the choice deserves attention.
Inverter architectures compared
| Type | Shading handling | Monitoring | Typical warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| String inverter | Whole string limited | Per string | 10–10 yrs |
| Microinverters | Per panel | Per panel | 25 yrs |
| Power optimisers | Per panel | Per panel | 25 yrs |
The practical trade-off
On a simple, unshaded roof a good string inverter is the proven, cost-effective choice. For complex roofs, partial shade, or east–west arrays, per-panel electronics (microinverters or optimisers) recover lost production and add panel-level monitoring.
