Batteries Without Solar: Does a Standalone Home Battery Pay?
A battery can still save money or provide backup on its own by arbitraging tariffs. Here’s when it makes sense without panels.

A standalone battery charges cheaply from the grid (or from a time-of-use window) and discharges in peak periods. It can provide backup and bill savings even if you never install solar — but the economics differ.
When it makes sense
- You have a wide price gap between off-peak and peak rates
- You want backup power without panels
- You get a strong VPP or grid-services incentive
- You have solar plans “later” and want storage now
The catch
Charging from the grid at retail rates reduces the arbitrage margin versus solar-based charging. Payback is typically longer without solar, unless tariffs or incentives are unusually favourable.
