How Home Batteries Work: Chemistry, Flow & the Smart Software
What actually happens inside a home battery — cells, chemistry, the battery management system, and how software decides when to charge and discharge.

A home battery is a stack of lithium-ion cells managed by a battery management system (BMS), all coordinated by software that decides when to charge, hold, or discharge based on your solar, tariff and usage.
The hardware
- Cells (often LFP) that store energy chemically
- A BMS monitoring voltage, temperature and state of charge
- Power electronics that convert DC↔AC
- A casing with thermal and fire protection
The software
Smart batteries use forecasting: they learn your usage, watch solar production and tariff windows, and decide charging/discharging to maximise savings while keeping a reserve. This is why “smart” batteries adapt as rates and seasons change.
How does a battery know when to charge?
Smart batteries use your tariff schedule, solar forecast and usage history. You can usually override with manual modes or per-appliance rules.
