Home EV Charging Costs Explained: What You Really Pay
The true cost of charging an EV at home — per-kWh math, off-peak savings, and how it compares with petrol and public fast charging.

Home charging is almost always the cheapest way to refuel an EV — typically a fraction of the cost of petrol per equivalent distance, and usually cheaper than public fast charging. Your exact figure depends on your electricity rate.
The per-kWh math
Multiply the kWh your EV draws by your home rate (and add ~10% for charging losses). Example: 50kWh at $0.15/kWh ≈ $7.50 for roughly 350km of range.
Illustrative home vs public charging cost
| Scenario | Cost @ 50kWh | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Off-peak home (low rate) | ~US$7 | Nearly always cheapest |
| Standard home rate | ~US$13 | Still cheaper than petrol |
| Public fast charger | ~US$25–50 | Can approach petrol cost |
Is home charging worth it versus petrol?
In nearly every region, yes — home charging is dramatically cheaper per distance than petrol, particularly off-peak. Public fast charging narrows the gap.
