How to Read Your Electricity Bill: Every Line Explained
Your bill hides the numbers that decide whether solar or a battery makes sense. Here’s what each line means in plain language.

A typical bill breaks your cost into energy used (kWh), a supply/connection charge, and any per-period rates. Those three numbers — plus your feed-in tariff — are what you need to size solar or a battery.
The key lines
Common bill lines decoded
| Line | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Usage (kWh) | Energy you consumed | Sizes your solar array |
| Supply / daily charge | Connection fee | Fixed, not avoidable |
| Peak / off-peak rates | Per-kWh price by period | Drives battery value |
| Feed-in / export | Paid for solar exports | Sets export economics |
Find your daily kWh
Add 12 months of usage and divide by 365. That daily figure is the anchor for solar sizing. If your bill only shows monthly totals, that 30-day average still works for planning.
