Depth of Discharge (DoD): What It Means for Your Battery

Depth of discharge describes how much of a battery’s capacity you use per cycle — and it directly affects how long the battery lasts.

Depth of discharge (DoD) is the percentage of a battery’s capacity used in a given cycle. Cycle life and DoD are linked: the deeper you routinely discharge, the fewer cycles the battery delivers before degrading.

Modern home batteries typically allow aggressive DoD (80–100%) with good cycle life, thanks to lithium-ion chemistry and thermal management. Always compare usable capacity, which already accounts for the DoD limit.
