What Is a Feed-in Tariff (and Should You Chase It)?

The feed-in tariff is what you’re paid for exporting surplus solar. Here’s why it’s usually not the main prize.

A feed-in tariff (FiT) is the per-kWh rate your retailer pays for solar you export to the grid. It’s typically far below the retail rate you pay to buy power — which is why self-consumption usually matters more than exporting.

How to use it

In most regions, the smart approach is to size for your own usage rather than to maximise exports. If your FiT is unusually high, exporting changes the math in your favour.
