Battery Recycling & End-of-Life: What Happens to Old Home Batteries?

Home batteries don’t disappear at end of life. Here’s the honest picture of recycling, second-life use, and what to do with yours.

When a home battery reaches end of life (around 10–15 years, or when it’s degraded past useful capacity), it shouldn’t go in general waste. Lithium batteries are recyclable, and many manufacturers and installers offer take-back programs.

Options at end of life

  • Manufacturer / installer take-back schemes
  • Second-life reuse (e.g. grid services, stationary reuse) where viable
  • Specialist lithium recycling for cells and materials
  • Regulated disposal where recycling isn’t available
