Single Phase vs Three Phase EV Charging: What You Need to Know
Three-phase charging unlocks higher speeds (11–22kW), but most homes are single-phase. Here’s how to tell what you have and what it means.

Most homes are supplied with single-phase power (one live conductor), which limits residential AC charging to about 7.4kW. Three-phase supply unlocks 11kW and 22kW charging — but only if your home, the charger, and your EV all support it.
AC charging at home by supply
| Supply | Typical max | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-phase | 7.4 kW | Standard for most homes |
| Three-phase | 11–22 kW | Needs 3-phase supply + compatible car |
| Three-phase 32A | 22 kW | Uncommon at home |
How to check what you have
- Look at your switchboard / meter labelling or ask your electricity distributor
- Ask an electrician to confirm supply type and capacity
- Check your EV’s onboard charger supports 11 or 22 kW AC
