Net metering measures the energy you send to the grid (exports) and credits you for it — usually at a per-kWh rate called a feed-in tariff (FiT). Your bill nets the energy you import against the credits you earn.
Export models at a glance
| Model | What you’re paid | Typical where |
|---|---|---|
| Net metering (1:1) | Retail-rate credit per exported kWh | Some US states |
| Feed-in tariff (FiT) | Set per-kWh rate, often below retail | AU, UK common |
| Time-of-use export | Varies by hour/season | Maturing markets |
What happens to unused export credits?
Depending on your plan, credits may roll over, be paid out annually, or expire. Check your retailer’s policy.
