6.6kW Solar System Guide: Output, Panels & Pricing

The 6.6kW system is Australia’s most popular residential size. Here’s what it generates, how many panels you need, and what it costs.

In Australia, 6.6kW of panels paired with a 5kW inverter is the default home system. The 1.66:1 panel-to-inverter ratio captures more production in the shoulder hours while keeping inverter cost down.

Typical output

In most Australian capitals a 6.6kW system generates roughly 24–30 kWh per day, or around 8,800–11,000 kWh per year. Exact output depends on orientation, tilt, shading and local sun hours.

Panels needed for a 6.6kW array

Panel wattageNumber of panelsApprox roof area
330W20 panels~40 m²
370W18 panels~36 m²
440W15 panels~30 m²

What it typically costs

Installed prices in Australia commonly range from roughly A$6,000 to A$10,000 depending on panel/inverter brand and install quality. Plan for a premium tier (premium panels + string or hybrid inverter) to sit at the top of that range.

Why not just 6kW of panels?
6.6kW is widely available and often the largest size allowed on standard single-phase exports without extra paperwork in some states — plus the cost difference over 6kW is small.
Is the 5kW inverter too small?
No. Panels rarely hit full rated output, and slight inverter oversizing (panel-to-inverter ratio above 1) is intentional to harvest more total energy across the day.
